The seven people in charge of decision making for Blackfalds for the next four years were sworn in as mayor and council Tuesday evening.
Blackfalds RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Ken Morrison, in full dress uniform, officiated the ceremony before the organizational meeting of the new council session commenced.
“This looks like a very strong council moving forward. I’m looking forward to working with everyone and I think council has every opportunity to do a wonderful job,” said Mayor Poole. “One of the first things we’ll be learning about and working on together is the municipal budget for 2018. From there, it’s a matter of continuing on with our goals outlined in the Municipal Sustainability Plan and continuing to work towards those goals over the next four years.”
Mayor Poole’s first act after the swearing in was to declare the new council in session.
The first item on the agenda was the General Duties and Guidelines of Conduct for council including procedural bylaws, meetings, agendas, communications and other governing items as per the Municipal Government Act. Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Myron Thompson presented the information and also addressed requirements for training and orientation for the new mayor and councillors briefing them on recent updates and upcoming changes to the Municipal Government Act.
Highlights included environmental stewardship as it applies to municipalities, collaboration with local school boards, planning and development amendments and property assessment and taxation.
CAO Thompson said that Blackfalds is “in good shape” as far as these updates and amendment because of the progressive work of the prior council in the community.
