BDI Play Designs, an Alberta company, will build Blackfalds’ Cottonwood/School Playground for $225,000.
Sean Barnes, Director of Community Services for the Town of Blackfalds, told council during its regular meeting April 11, that the design chosen was one preferred by the students involved in the selection process.
“It was nice to see what the kids had to say.”
The town received seven proposals with various themes and staff narrowed it down to nine playground designs from four different companies. The town invited staff and student representatives from both Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus (IRIC) and St. Gregory the Great Catholic School to give their input at an April 5 recreation board meeting.
Two outdoor playgrounds will be constructed. One will be designed for children aged five to eight at a cost of $100,000. Another playground, designed for ages nine to 12, will be built for $125,000.
The town budgeted $125,000 in its 2017 capital budget for the Cottonwood/School Playgrounds. The Parents of Iron Ridge Intermediate Society (PIRIS) have raised $25,000. This amount was matched by the Red Deer Regional Catholic School Division. PIRIS applied for a matching CFEP grant of $50,000.
A special needs swing will be included in the project.
